Our last week spent in Japan was in Okinawa, Japan's south Island. Looking forward to sun and beach, something that we dearly missed, we arrived to a down pour of rain. Its funny now that I think back to it, but it seemed the rain kinda followed me everywhere in Japan. A little disheartened, we picked up our rental car and drove North up the coast line of Okinawa to our resort. There weren't that many foreigners in Okinawa so planning the trip was rather hard as most places ONLY spoke Japanese. Would of loved to visit the smaller islands like Miyako, but as they required another connecting flight to get there, we kinda ran out of time.
We stayed at the Kanucha Resort which had it's own private beach, 3 pools, 7 restaurants, 1 golf course, spa and also its very own bus that takes you to different stops within the resort. Our own little suite had its own little Jacuzzi on our balcony and an interior decor that was very Bali-esque.
Everyday we woke up to clear blue skies and a stunning view of the ocean and the beach. Luck was on our side as we'd enjoy perfect weather during the day, with rain at night. Some highlights of the trip:
Driving to the Churaumi Aquarium (world's second largest aquarium) we came across a coast side with amazingly blue water that stretched out miles out to sea and met with the horizon and made it look like as if the ocean dropped off the edge of the globe. They had some amazingly man made structures which I think were designed as a wave buffer?
Churaumi was actually quite an impressive aquarium too. One of their tanks housed three whale sharks, tuna, angel fish, grey nurse sharks, bull rays, eagle rays and all whole lot of other tropical and pelagic fish. I think in all we spent about 2-3 hours just in the one area. There were sea creatures that I've actually never seen in any of the other aquariums I've been to back home in Australia and they also had a shark research lab. Kinda freaky in there as there were shark specimens in like jars and what not.

The second day was spent with our guide Masa who took us diving with three whale sharks and snorkeling around in the Blue Cave. Both were amazing experiences, especially the whale shark dive, I was so nervous at first I could literally feel my heart jumping out of my chest and panicked slightly when I actually had to go under water and swim literally centimeters from a whale shark of 8 meters long. We also purchased a new water housing for our camera, which meant plenty of underwater snaps and close ups!
Okinawa was definitely an experience that showed me an alternate side to Japanese culture. It was so unlike the mainland Japan and its culture rather more Eastern influenced. Its locals are a lot more like us here back home, love for surf, sun and sand.
